Have You Met the Crazy, Scientology-Sympathizing Nevada Republican Senate Candidate?

Have You Met the Crazy, Scientology-Sympathizing Nevada Republican Senate Candidate?Senate Majority LeaderHarry Reid (D - NV) is fighting a tough re-election campaign against former Nevada AssemblywomanSharron Angle. "Tough," partly because he has high unfavorables. And partly because Sharron Angle keeps doing things like encouraging his assassination.

Yes, that's right: Sharron Angle, Republican candidate for Senate in the great state of Nevada ("All for Our Country"), told conservative talk radio host Lars Larson that "people are really looking toward thoseSecond Amendmentremedies and saying, 'My goodness what can we do to turn this country around?' And I'll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out."

Whatever could she have meant by that? "I meant take him out of office, and taking him out of office is a little different," she later clarified. "I changed my rhetoric." Of course! She must have confused herself, because the Second Amendment concerns the right of the people to bear arms, while voting people out of office is covered in the Fifteenth Amendment. Not that she's not right: Not voting for a candidate is, indeed, "a little different" than murdering him with a gun.

And wouldn't you know? Former Assemblywoman Angle, the official candidate of the Tea Party Express, has strong views on a multitude of other, non-assassinating-Harry-Reid-type issues, such as:

Abortion: Angle believes abortion should be illegal, due to God. Asked if she believes that there should be exceptions in cases of rape and incest, she told radio host Bill Manders, "God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things." So for example, if God's plan is that you get raped, His plan is also that you keep your baby. Just have a little faith!

Unemployment: Nevada currently leads the nation in unemployment. Who gives a shit, though? Not Sharron Angle! Sharron Angle's position on the unemployed is that they are "spoiled," and Senators are "not in the business of creating jobs." She later clarified that what she really meant was that welfare "has spoiled our citizenry" and that "the system of entitlement has caused us to have a spoilage with our ability to go out and get a job," which is just, bravo, for using the word "spoilage."

Scientology: Sharron Angle believes that L. Ron Hubbard had the answers when it comes to curing addiction, and supports the "natural homeopathic medicine" he "developed" to deal with prison addicts. But it's not Scientology! It's just a psychiatry alternative invented by L. Ron Hubbard.

The United Nations: That old thing? Why, to Sharron Angle, it's just "the umpire on fraudulent science such as global warming."

Don't get too attached to those positions, though! Angle launched a new websiteon Thursday that "softens" her positions mostly by "removing them entirely."

And don't get too attached to Sharron Angle, either. She and Harry Reid are neck-and-neck right now in the polls, but she's going to need a lot more money—Reid's got about ten times as much. Maybe she can check with the Church of Scientology?

21 killed in shootout between drug, migrant trafficking gangs near Arizona border

mexico-violence HERMOSILLO, Mexico

HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) — A massive gun battle between rival drug and migrant trafficking gangs near the U.S. border Thursday left 21 people dead and at least six others wounded, prosecutors said.

The fire fight occurred in a sparsely populated area about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Arizona border, near the city of Nogales, that is considered a prime corridor for immigrant and drug smuggling.

The Sonora state Attorney General's Office said in a statement that nine people were captured by police at the scene of the shootings, six of whom had been wounded in the confrontation. Eight vehicles and seven weapons were also seized.

All of the victims were believed to be members of the gangs.

The shootings occurred near a dirt road between the hamlets of Tubutama and Saric, in an area often used by traffickers.

Gangs often fight for control of trafficking routes and sometimes steal "shipments" of undocumented migrants from each other, but seldom have they staged such mass gun battles.

Gang violence near the Arizona border has led to calls from officials in the U.S. state for greater control of the border and is one reason given for a controversial law passed in April requiring Arizona police to ask people about their immigration status in certain situations.

In a city on another part of the U.S. border, gunmen killed an assistant attorney general for Chihuahua state and one of her bodyguards.

After being chased by armed assailants through the darkened streets of Ciudad Juarez, the vehicle carrying Sandra Salas Garcia and two bodyguards was riddled with bullets Wednesday night.

Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, said the second bodyguard was seriously wounded.

Salas was responsible for evaluating the work of prosecutors and special investigations units in Chihuahua.

Drug violence has killed more than 4,300 people in recent years in Ciudad Juarez, which borders El Paso, Texas.

More than 23,000 people have been killed by drug violence since late 2006, when President Felipe Calderon began deploying thousands of troops and federal police to drug hot spots.

Recently Discovered Fossils Push Back Date of First Multicellular Life on Earth by 1.5 Billion Years

from Neatorama by John Farrier

Paleontologists recently found fossils in Africa that indicate that multicellular life evolved on Earth 1.5 billion years before previously thought:

“The cursor on the origin of complex multicellular life is no longer 600 million years ago, as has long been maintained, but more like 2.1 billion years,” said Abderrazak El Albani, a researcher at the University of Poitiers and lead author of the study.

The findings were published in the British journal Nature.

Up to now, conventional scientific wisdom held that the planet was populated only by single-celled microbes until the so-called Cambrian explosion, a major surge of biodiversity that began some 600 million years ago.

Venezuela seizes oil rigs owned by US company - Yahoo! News

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela's government has seized control of 11 oil rigs owned by U.S. driller Helmerich & Payne, which shut them down because the state oil company was behind on payments.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez announced that Venezuela would nationalize the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based company's rigs. He said in a statement Wednesday that Helmerich & Payne had rejected government demands to resume drilling operations for more than a year.

Helmerich & Payne announced in January 2009 that it was stopping operations on two of its drilling rigs, because Venezuela's state-run oil company, PDVSA, owed the company close to $100 million. It said it would shut down the rest of its rigs by the end of July as contracts expired unless PDVSA began to make good on its debts.

The company said Thursday that PDVSA's debt was $43 million as of June 14.

Referring to Helmerich & Payne, Ramirez said: "There's a group of drill owners who have refused to discuss service prices and have preferred to have this equipment put away for a year."

President and CEO Hans Helmerich said in a statement on Thursday the company's position has remained clear: "We simply wanted to be paid for work already performed."

"We stated repeatedly we wanted to return to work, just not for free," he said. "We are surprised by yesterday's announcement only because we have been in ongoing efforts in a good faith attempt to accommodate a win-win resolution, including a willingness to sell rigs."

The company has worked in Venezuela for 52 years, Helmerich added.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said he hopes Helmerich & Payne is compensated and suggested the takeover and other recent nationalizations are scaring off private investment in Venezuela.

"We would just call on them, if they did make such a move, to compensate the owners of those wells," Toner said. "This is the latest in such an instance where international investors, their investments are being nationalized by the government of Venezuela. It doesn't speak or bode well for the investment climate there."

Helmerich & Payne is not the only oil services company to have complained about a delay in payments. Dallas-based Ensco International Inc. said last year that it had suspended oil drilling operations off Venezuela's Caribbean coast because Venezuela owed it $35 million — prompting PDVSA to take over the company's operations.

The government of President Hugo Chavez has nationalized dozens of privately owned companies in recent years as the socialist leader seeks to expand the state's role in the economy. Government critics and many business owners argue the takeovers violate private property rights.

Helmerich & Payne Inc. is primarily a contract drilling company. As of June 8, the company's existing fleet included 214 U.S. land rigs, 39 international land rigs and nine offshore platform rigs.

Giant whale-eating whale discovered

from Doobybrain.com by Doobybrain

Umm, I’m just going to let the writers at Discovery explain this one:

The massive skull and jaw of a 13-million-year-old sperm whale has been discovered eroding from the windblown sands of a coastal desert of Peru. The extinct cousin of the modern sperm whale is the first fossil to rival modern sperm whales in size — although this is a very different beast, say whale evolution experts.

If this thing was so big, why did it take so long for somebody to figure out it wasn’t just a rock? Seriously though, that picture up there is straight out of The Adventures of Scamper the Penguin.
